have you not heard the "maxim" of.........

I just fail completely to be able to follow how those two particular flavour properties could match in any way - all I can imagine is a mega flavour conflict

Some grappa has a very short ageing in a juniper barrel. Very easy to overdo it though. Use sparingly.
