Time for an upgrade.....

Post by Icefever »

Since I've started doing 45/50 litre washes, it's getting a pain in the arse having to do twice the strip runs in my old T5....this was the reason I added the 2nd element to speed up the time to heat.

I need to get out in the garage today but can't as I've got a call out this morning and don't want another 2-day stilling.

I've been looking at 40/50 litre boilers, (I should have held on to that milk can Mr P  )......never mind,.. wise after the event

I've seen a couple that would suit me, I'm not getting into building one from a keg, I just don't have the time. I want to enjoy my hobby, so buying is the way for me.

I can agree with you there, a doubling of size would have been good during the summer, will matter less during the winter months as I then have less to do in daylight hours.
Maybe next year I will find some time to ammend my lazy, but easy ways.

Might a freezer be easier / cheaper?

I keep one batch 'in' the freezer. 50l would be 24-28 after jacking? Nice T500 fill.

Mind you, it means more lifting, rather than pumping?

Exactly, that is what I want to try and get away from, as I now have a 50litre wash/mash pot that sits in the corner I can place the boiler under the tap fill and run, no lifting ;)

You and me both👍

And TBH a frozen 25l is a slippery beast to invert.

Do we need is a 12 liter youngs wide mouth fermenter?

Questions if you would need to do a 50liter run of you could go quicker with smaller. Bigger is not always the answer.

Try this..

It questions if you would need to do a 50liter run, if you could do quicker, smaller runs. Bigger is not always the answer.

I can agree with that.
But 4 x 12 litre washes seem like more work than a single 50 litre one.
And don't you run monster wine brews? the size of which would scare me, in case it went wrong!

Agreed. But there is only one way to make grape wine. Fermenting more.

Here I was looking at making the stripping process easy.

My focus here was to suggest instead of 50l do 2x25 freeze and invert. Which concentrates 50l to make it a single load for the T500 spirit run.

4x 12s would be just the same, just easier to invert.
Maybe brew 50l together and pump into smaller vessels for the freezer. Could be easier that an upgrade and/or longer stripping runs.

There is more than one way.....just discussing ideas.

"Go big" isn't always the answer. But I use that for wine.

"Lots of little" has it's place. Airstills do this REALLY well.

"Outside the box". Operating the same kit in different ways also works in certain circumstances.
I mash overnight and ferment in the kettle for beer. For me this has proved to be stunning, both in time and product quality.

Different drinks different strokes (see what I did there) 😁😁

There are certainly more ways than one to skin a rabbit, or ferment a brew.
I guess you try a few, and settle on one that suits.
I can't resist!
Suits you sir!
