new fermenter........

Used to have about 6 or 7 (25 litre buckets, with lids punched for an airlock grommet).

Got into the bad habit of washing them out and leaving to dry in the garden. Bad move as they degraded with UV exposure and would snap/crack making them unusable.

Decided last week to get a second one. A quick google last week and I ended up getting a reduced price one (black Friday), a 60 litre speidel one which has come complete with tap/blanking cap/larger airlock etc.

Been a while since I did a 50 litre batch, and forgot how heavy it is when filled.

Mixed up 42ltr and 12 kg of sugar ok, got it moved to where it'll be out of the way and chucked 1 pack of Vodka Star in (forgetting it should be 2 packs), had to find an extension lead as the stick blender/balloon whisk only has a short lead, so blitzed the hell out of it on Saturday afternoon, it had started to show signs yesterday morning, and was going mad this morning when I left for work.

Pleased as punch with the quality of it, but will now likely have to find a small pump to move the wash to a still once the ferment is finished.

Any tips or links for small pump ideas would be much appreciated 👍

I use 230v,50herz Chugger pumps with stainless steel ends.

They're 15 years old but the quality lingers long after the cost has been forgotten!!

As US is 60herz standard I seem to remember they were on special order.

That looks like a decent bit of kit. It is pleasing that it has a ‘humanised design’

That would have gone on my Christmas list had I know about it last week.

Does it push liquid uphill in a satisfactory fashion?

Never tried it to any height Moss, from a 30-litre bucket it''ll empty it all into the still in a few mins.

Oh you buys just like boys toys. For that amount of pennies I can pay for a Turkish wet shave, or half way towards a steam message.

You really need to sort your shit out.

4 x that amount a really good lego kit.

6 x that amount a bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne.

I am not going to type anything else.

Think sbout it. A transfer pump. Suck on it.

Just ordered one now.

Despite mixing that wash as a "double" quantity, but only adding 1 pack of yeast, it was still finished in just over a week, and despite WG's minor cynicism, lifting the fermenter so it could be manually siphoned is out (can lift it off the floor to move, but up onto the kitchen counter is out, without some craneage).

The actual build quality of the speidel fermenter is excellent for plastic (almost as rugged as an IBC).

Now just got to work out about smaller pumps etc, so I can recomission my T500

TVM for that suggestion Ice, an excellent piece of kit for shifting wash to stills.

It's making the use of my 50 litre speidel fermenter a breeze.........
