I knew the Romans introduced it, but I thought it was as a pot herb. I haven't heard about the roots; they are quite brittle so I'd be impressed if anyone managed that. Also more roots in the pot? Just rinse off the earth before cooking?
Only brittle when trying to pull, maybe pot growing helps in harvesting?
WTFDIK? speculating on some old gardening and feeding practices.

Pot herb rather than potted herb.
A pot herb is a leafy green eaten as a vegetable rather than grown in a pot.
But give the young growth a go, you may be pleasantly suprised

I have never done a kale wash.
Gaza the instructor,your post, 7th one in from start of this topic, 4 pages ago. I am temped to try it. I am just producing nuetral through a SS SRS. What will be the likely finished Abv of the wash? 2 weeks fermenting time seems reasonable that is close to my usual cycle using a turbo. Want to try it, made a tpw a few years ago, it took 4 - 5 weeks to get anywhere close, so I was not impressed. So......

The lentil and tomato paste wash is a bit smoother.
If you keep it warm two weeks. Very nice. Have you thought of freezer strip?

Hey Welshgin if you're producing neutral maybe you could try wheatbran for your wash. Have a look at teddysad's fast fermenting vodka recipe mate
. Tffv lives up to its name if you follow the recipe. I use it all the time now for voddie and gin. I started some on the 9th and it's about done now, I keep it around 25c. I tried it first because I was getting complaints about the noxious farty atmosphere caused by 100l of kale wash. Nettle wash is just about pong free but slow compared to tffv.
PS wheat bran is very cheap from holland and Barrett which is another plus if you're from Yorkshire.

Out of curiosity I just I just dropped my hydrometer in the fermenters, 0.980 in 4.5 days, thats what you call rapid
. I only use 4kg sainsbury's cane sugar but even so thats fast!

I know it's hard to believe mash but yes definitely had 4kg of sugar in each fermenter. The wash was 30c when I put the yeast in (allinsons). My 30cm tube heater keeps the wash around 25c. The recipe is teddysad's standard fast fermenting vodka.

Did another wheatbran wash last night, it set off like a scalded cat as per usual. I forgot to mention DO NOT put a lid on the fermenters, it will just foam out of the air lock if you do.

Well thats another 100l of wheatbran wash fermented dry in four and a half days from scratch, I'll be stripping it in 3 or 4 days when some other wash's are only half way through fermenting

4kg cane sugar Mash, I've already stripped the wash I did a couple of weeks back but I've not tasted it. I usually do two 100l wash's and put them in my reflux column for voddie and gin. I'll have a sip tomoz and report back mate

It's difficult trying to describe a taste but I'll give it a go
. It's a few minutes since I had a sip, there isn't anything unpleasant lingering but I can taste a bit of tails, I collect down to 30% though, sometimes a bit lower. It's a clean flavour, a bit wheatie like good bread. Once you get past that raw straight out of the still thing I'm left with a quite pleasant aftertaste. If it had been kale wash I would be getting a little bit of brassica aftertaste.
The recipe I use differs slightly from tffv and is as below
I put 250g of wheatbran in 5l of boiling water and simmer for 15mins.
Pour over 4kg of sugar, add water till its 25l and 30c.
Crush 2 vit B1 100mg tabs and add to bulk
Add 1.5 heaped tspoons of DAP.
ADD 40G Allinsons dried yeast
I then give it a minute or two with a stick blender to get plenty of air into it
Stand back.
I don't bother with citric, maybe I'm missing a trick though
. This wash doesn't form a cap and I've never had a foam over. It always ferments dry in 5 days or less if its kept at 25c

You don't really need the Wheatgran BB the vit B tabs and the DAP will
ferment like mad on their own .

Ta for that Gazza, vit b tabs are cheaper than olive oil at the mo, I do use olive oil tho so it's good to know
