Well I've done it...

Post by Icefever »

Cancelled the TV licence, and SKy,.... just had enough of the crap on the tv these days. We never watched any of the soaps could never get my head around all the hype that was in the media.

Sky alone was £58 per month..£696 a year??? just imagine what parts for the still I can buy   1000's of channels most of them repeating themselves every hour.

£158 for the BBC??? for what?? make it a subscription then folks can make their own minds up....the UK is one of a small number of countries that make it illegal to watch a tv without a licence.

Tbh, I have never understood sky, unless you watch sport.

We have freesat and freeview and that's far tooo much.

Stopped watching the news, pretty much cos the facts are to hard to find and the hype gets you down.

So I completely understand your decision.

Don't get me wrong, they do have a couple of channels that we liked, but that did not compensate us for paying £696 a year. We now watch what we want via the net.
I agree about the news...far too many "experts" for my liking...you always have one "for expert" shouting over another "against expert".

Don't think you can watch it on the net without a licence. You will end up with a van with a spinning roof rack on your drive.

Late to the party
Ele's comment is missing.

I believe a BBC TV licence is worth the money, just for the BBC i-player, and for funding the World Radio Service.
I also donate annually to wickipedia and other charities, because I can, and do not expect to live for no cost.
I have a very modest income, but try to share it.
With some love.

It's all here....https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/faqs/FAQ104
"You don’t need a TV Licence if you only ever use online services to watch on demand or catch up programmes"

We use Netflix and are looking at Freesat also....it all boils down to a very simple rule....don't watch or record live tv, which we are ok with.

Good link Ice.

In summary then..

Nothing "live" from anywhere.
Nothing recorded.
Nothing BBC ever any-which-way.

From here....https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/faqs/FAQ104
"Remember, if you watch or record TV programmes live on any channel or TV service, or download or watch any BBC programmes on BBC iPlayer, you need to be covered by a TV Licence."

So to be sure, you need a freesat box, that doesn't tune into BBC and does not record? Not seen one to be honest. Anything else leaves your ass exposed imo. You can get iplayer on your phone?

I have to say I am left with the feeling you will need a good strong constitution to survive without a TV licence. The rules aren't written in your favour, you really need to live on the moon (without broadband) to be safe.
£158 for the BBC??? for what??
Change how you look at it. You could see it as good insurance against someone discovering an oofing great still in your shed? So to quote you...
just imagine what parts for the still I can buy
I think I tv license would make an excellent insurance policy for your still? You would pay £158 not to be arrested.. And it comes with free telly.🤣

Not trying to start a fight, just looking at the bigger picture?

Tread carefully mate.

There are different ways to view this issue.
And Sky TV and other PPV TV have never appealed to me.
I must have bought one of the first Free Sat. boxes available.
Amongst my few charitable services, I view helping the BBC beam a service around the world as highly as being a blood donor.
If you have never given the BBC World Service a listen, give it a try some time.
It has taught many people to speak English, and given much information and hope to many.
Yes, it is now a large corporation, with a host of problems, I have hope that the new DG will learn from the mistakes of the past, and the ridiculous salaries that it currently pays to some of it's "stars"
Sure, I may be as naive as the average 7 year old.
But I live in hope. :)
And lollipops

Eh? What? I don't have a clue what you are talking about.
Have I reported the thread / item? If I did, then I didn't even know I had done that, and didn't set out to do that. Might have pressed the wrong button without realising it.

If so, then apologies all round, and it wasn't intentional.

<Elecrafter's intended post>

I think you still need a licence to watch some TV via the net. I would investigate further to be sure of being legal etc.

If that was your intended post Ele....you are correct....if you stick to no live tv by whatever means then you are ok. There is so much info out there if you need it....even the good old BBC give you the info. In fact, it's crazy you can not watch "live" channels from another country and that country may not even have a licence for watching the said tv channel....that means the BBC is charging you for that advantage.

Without Sky we have reduced the number of "live" channels on offer.....stick to streaming which we are doing...no problems. We both now find we have more time in the morning without all the news channels going on about which A-lister is doing what to whomever...and we both admit we don't miss it at all.
A small writeup in the media only the other day said that some "official body" has called for the BBC to be sold off has that would give the treasury... I forget the figure something like £9 billion to spend on the NHS....

Sometimes, I want to smack my mates over the head with a bottle.
I then realise the feeling is probably mutual.
I still consider them as my mates. :)

No problemo Dude...they have to prove that we are watching live tv.......you can tell/post them "Removal of Implied Rights of Access"....

This is an extremely powerful document used in the correct circumstances. It can be posted as a notice on the entrance to your property or sent to a Corporation as notice that they should not send agents to your property.

I would either take the TV antenna down, so you don't have one, and also disconnect the antenna cable from the TV. If a TV is connected to the any power, and an antenna, it is a valid installation (legally speaking) and can be used to watch live TV. If you don't have an antenna, you cant watch live transmitted programmes.

I have two mates who don't have TV licenses, or even TV's, they wrote to the licensing people and stated their position, no tv and no antenna, and they have been left alone.

The old 1970/80's TV Detector Vans had very sensitive receivers and very very high gain antennas, and they pointed them at your house and received the IF oscillator in the TV which radiates a small signal. This way they can tell if the TV is on or Off, and in pre digital days even what channel you were receiving. I don't know what they do nowadays, as I knew some guys who did the TV detection as their job back in the 70's. I'm a lot out of touch, and my mates are retired, and one has even passed away. It was a long time ago!

They simply looked at who in a street DIDNT have a licence (from their records) and targeted those properties.
Probably still the same today.

Just my 2d's worth.

Got to admit there are so may repeats on the telly that you should
be granted a repeat on your license.
Television also kills the art of conversation, although in the case of
the wife I keep it on and turn up the volume, nothing to say and stops
the punch ups.

I have worked in derelict domestic dwellings, maybe 8 years ago, I had a bloke knock on the door and ask to see a TV license.
Come in, I said, look for a TV.
He declined.
